Previous City Bikeways Information

28 February 2017

We are transforming Adelaide into a smart, green, liveable and creative city that enables our community to thrive. The project supports the City of Adelaide 2016-2022 Strategic Plan by delivering cycling routes throughout the City and Park Lands.

The project will create a separated environment for people who ride bikes along these routes, improving safety, comfort and enjoyment for all road users. In addition, the project will include improvements to landscaping, lighting, paving and signage where appropriate.

The two bikeway routes
The City Bikeways project is a visionary partnership between the South Australian State Government and the City of Adelaide. It will introduce two continuous and separated bikeways through the City of Adelaide, from north to south, and from east to west.

North-South Bikeway
Our work to date has focused on the creation of a north-south bikeway which builds on the existing Frome Bikeway connecting the existing Rugby/Porter Bikeway in Unley to the Braund Road Bike Boulevard in Prospect.
The scope of the project considers changes to the current separated bikeway design in Frome Street and Regent Street North between Carrington Street and Pirie Street to enable two lanes of motor vehicle traffic in both directions during peak hours as requested by Council. This aim has influenced the development of the various bikeway treatments (design ideas) that could be applied to the entire length of the north-south bikeway.

At its 29 November 2016 meeting, Council approved the release of the design treatments for the north-south bikeway for community engagement recognising Treatment 1 (flush buffer) and Treatment 6 (kerb and median island) as the principle options for the existing section of the Frome Street bikeway for public comment.

Consistent with Council direction our treatment options allow two peak hour traffic lanes in each direction, where street width and traffic volume permit, the width of the bikeway will not generally be less than 2.5m.

Please take advantage of any of the opportunities that have been planned to make comment on the project to inform its development – we welcome any comments you may have.

East-West Bikeway

Route options for the east-west bikeway will be considered along Grote/Wakefield streets, Flinders/Franklin streets and Pirie/Waymouth streets with separate community engagement to occur in 2017. (See map)
