Information
We would like your feedback on a proposal to rename the northern part of Queen Street (between Angas Street and Carrington Street) to Sister Janet Mead Street.
This proposal has arisen following a request from the community to honour the legacy and contributions of Sister Janet Mead. Your feedback will help Council decide if the northern part of Queen Street should be renamed.
If the proposal goes ahead the northern part of Queen Street will change name to Sister Janet Mead Street. The properties on the northern part will change address to Sister Janet Mead Street. The southern part will not change name, and the existing street numbers of the properties will not change.
The street renaming proposal comes from a community request to recognise the legacy of Sister Janet Mead. Sister Janet Mead founded the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons in 1985, was named South Australian Person of the Year in 2005, and became internationally known for her 1973 recording of The Lord’s Prayer.
You can find out more about Sister Janet Mead here.
On 24 March 2026, Council decided to seek community feedback on a proposal to rename part of Queen Street. The section proposed for renaming is the northern portion (between Angas Street and Carrington Street). The proposed new name is Sister Janet Mead Street.

What Happens Next
We will prepare a report for the Elected Members of Council summarising the feedback received during public consultation. This report will most likely be considered by Council in July or August 2026.
The Elected Members of Council will make their final decision about whether to proceed with the proposed street renaming following their consideration of consultation feedback.
The outcomes of Council’s decision will be communicated via letters to all owners and occupiers along Queen Street, and via an update to the Our Adelaide project page.
Should the renaming of the northern portion of Queen Street proceed, owners and occupiers will be given at least two months advance notice before their address formally changes, within which time they will need to update their contact details with their relatives, friends, businesses, government agencies and any other applicable people or organisations.
