Project Update
At its meeting on 26 August 2025, Council resolved to progress the O'Connell Street revitalisation project. The endorsed design will deliver upgrades to footpaths, lighting, landscaping, street furniture and greening, all aimed at creating a safer, more attractive, and vibrant main street.
The revitalisation is designed to enhance O'Connell Street as a destination, supporting local businesses and making the street more welcoming for people on foot, for outdoor dining, and for community activity. The project will deliver a greener, better lit, and more accessible street that encourages people to spend time in North Adelaide.
Whilst the project will progress without the inclusion of a separate bikeway, Council continues to remain committed to progressing active transport within the City of Adelaide.
We will continue to explore opportunities that expand and strengthen the cycling network within North Adelaide.
The O'Connell Street Revitalisation project will deliver improvements that provide immediate benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors, including safer pedestrian spaces and a more welcoming environment.
Detailed design will continue through 2025, with further reports to Council in early 2026 before construction begins in stages.
Information
The revitalisation of O’Connell Street is funded and moving towards delivery.
This project is a great opportunity to enhance one of North Adelaide’s key main streets. The revitalisation will improve safety, walkability, and cycling access, introduce more green spaces, and create a welcoming public environment that supports local businesses while preserving the street’s heritage.
Early works will begin in mid-2025 and will focus on the section between Tynte Street and Archer Street during the completion of the construction of Eighty Eight O’Connell to minimise disruption.
These early works will be limited to footpath and new street furniture, improved lighting, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and does not include the separated bikeway.
