Main streets are the physical, economic, social and cultural hearts of their communities. They are important places for trade and commerce and play a crucial role in community connection and neighbourhood character. Main street revitalisation refers to the planned process of implementing initiatives and fostering main street environments that support thriving main street communities.

Construction will be undertaken in two phases:

Early works – 88 O’Connell Street

We are going to upgrade the section of O’Connell Street between Tynte Street and Archer Street in line with the completion of the development at 88 O’Connell Street. The reason for this is so that we reduce disruption to this area whilst construction of the new building is already underway. It also allows us to move and upgrade underground services in this section in a coordinated way with the building’s construction.

We are finalising the detailed design documents for this section now, with construction to start mid 2025. It should take approximately 3 months, finishing mid-2025.

Future works

We will finish detailed designs for the remainder of O’Connell Street through 2025 – 2026 along with undertaking ongoing engagement during this process. Construction works for the remainder of O’Connell Street are planned to start in 2027.

Works will be undertaken in stages to plan and manage impacts to business, residents and property owners. We will keep in touch with how this is going to be staged and which section(s) will be done first.

The City of Adelaide will endeavour to minimise disruption to traffic but may require occasional road closures. Stakeholders will be notified in advance, and pedestrian access will be maintained whenever possible.

Given the busy nature of the street, construction works are likely to cause some disruption to businesses and people using the street. It is a priority of the project to undertake construction staging efficiently and effectively, while managing disruption.
