Information

From 18 October 2023 to 15 November 2023, we sought community feedback on two proposed wombat crossings on Melbourne Street located at the:

  • Eastern end of Melbourne Street adjacent to the Grand Apartments
  • Western end of Melbourne Street in front of the Ronald McDonald House

Who we spoke with

Feedback was received via an online survey that was completed by 32 respondents who primarily lived in metropolitan Adelaide, who visit, commute, work or own a business within Melbourne Street.

How we engaged

Engagement was primarily undertaken via an online survey through the community engagement page on the City of Adelaide's website. A hard copy information pack and survey was also available at the City of Adelaide's Customer Centre, libraries and Community Centres. There was an option for the community to also provide feedback by calling the project team or by submitting a written response.

What we heard from our community

The engagement undertaken indicates that these is strong community support for wombat crossings on Melbourne Street for pedestrian safety and accessibility. This supports the community sentiment found from the previous engagement undertaken within the area.

The community feels a strong need for the installation of the western wombat crossing by Ronald McDonald House, with some advising that the need for this wombat crossing was greater than the proposed eastern crossing.

There was a clear sentiment from cyclists who use Melbourne Street that their safety and ease of access needed to be considered more in the design of the wombat crossings, but most generally supported the proposed crossings.

Some other concerns included looking at reducing speed limits on Melbourne Street for safety and a small number of people were concerned that wombat crossings would decrease safety due to driver behaviour. A strong finding was that the community looked forward to the wombat crossings due to the revitalisation it could bring to the area with landscaping and more pedestrian foot traffic which could be good for local business.
