Project Update
The City of Adelaide thanks those of you who took part in the recent consultation on the City of Adelaide Integrated Climate Strategy.
In June 2024, Council endorsed the Integrated Climate Strategy 2030. The Integrated Climate Strategy is now available to download.
The Strategy documents our ongoing progress towards five key goals:
- A climate resilient city
- A net zero city
- A city where nature thrives
- Transition to a decarbonised city
- A climate leading capital city

Background
A draft Integrated Climate Strategy 2030 has been developed to set our vision for a resilient, protected, and sustainable city where people can live, work, study and play, and adapt to changes in the climate that bring social and economic opportunity and disruption.
Join citizens around the world who are actively supporting their cities to reduce impact on the climate. Everyone has a part to play in reducing emissions and creating a resilient, protected and sustainable city. Collectively government, community and businesses need to work together towards this future.
The purpose of this engagement is to:
- Inform stakeholders and the community of Council’s proposed approach with respect to a resilient, protected, and sustainable city.
- Seek feedback on the draft Strategy and identified targets.
- Seek feedback on how Council can maximise the effectiveness of its roles as proposed in the draft Strategy.

The draft Integrated Climate Strategy 2023 has been endorsed by Council for community consideration. A copy of the strategy can be downloaded by clicking here or in the right-hand bar.
The draft Integrated Climate Strategy 2030 has been developed in response to, and is also informed by, a series of Council decisions and strategic directions that have occurred through 2022 and 2023, including:
- The August 2023 review of the Climate Change Risk Adaptation Action Plan, which included the intent to integrate Council’s Climate Risk Adaptation Plan 2021-2026 with the City of Adelaide Climate Action Plan 2022-2025.
- The Strategic Plan 2024-2028 Environment Pillar stating that in ten years Adelaide will be a leading Green City in a Park showcasing benefits of green infrastructure, increased biodiversity and a community that is adaptive and resilient to climate change.
- Feedback provided through City Plan Studio sessions held in September 2023.
- The endorsement of the current Climate Action Plan 2022-2025 on 2 May 2023 following comprehensive community consultation, and the inclusion of a priority action in this Plan to revise the community emissions target and map emission reduction pathways in 2023/24.
- The public consultation on Council’s draft Climate Policy as undertaken in 2022 as part of the Let’s Step it Up consultation.
The Strategy will collate the following existing strategies and action plans for integration into a single Strategy that focuses Council’s climate activities and investment:
- Climate Action Plan 2022-2025
- Carbon Neutral Strategy 2015-2025
- Climate Risk Adaptation Plan 2021-2026
- Resource Recovery Strategy and Action Plan 2020-2028
- Zero Emissions Vehicle Plan 2019-2030
- Water Sensitive Cities Plan 2021-2025
- Integrated Biodiversity Management Plan 2018-2023
A review of actions across the existing strategies and plans has been undertaken to prioritise those that best align with the feedback from Council to date on its climate priorities and with reference to the strategic priorities set out in Council’s draft Strategic Plan 2024-2028. The draft Strategy includes themes from all existing plans updated to reflect Council priorities.
