We are asking for feedback on proposed road closures for two events planned for 2026: Chinatown Adelaide Lunar New Year, and the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival Peak Hour of Power and Gouger Street Party.
Event and Road Closure Information
Chinatown Adelaide Lunar New Year 2026
The Chinatown Adelaide Lunar New Year Street Party is an annual community celebration that highlights the rich cultural diversity and traditions of various Asian communities. This vibrant event fosters cultural exchange, strengthens community bonds, and provides an opportunity for South Australians to experience Asian heritage through performances, food, and festive activities. This includes activations and activities which require the closure of roads in the City of Adelaide.
From 4:00am to 11:50pm on Saturday 21 February 2026, proposed road closures include:
- Gouger Street from Central Market U-Park Entrance to Morphett Street.
- Moonta Street from Grote Street to Gouger Street.
- California Street South in its entirety.
- Witcombe Street from Gouger Street to a point 25 meters north.
- Compton Street from Gouger Street to a point 25 metres south.
- Field Street from Gouger Street to Wright Court.
In 2026, the 23rd edition of this iconic event will be celebrated in the heart of Chinatown Adelaide. The Street Party transforms the precinct into a bustling hub of entertainment, featuring artists, culinary experts, and cultural exhibitors who bring the spirit of the Lunar New Year to life.
The Chinatown Adelaide SA Inc. (CASA) Red Hot Stage will showcase multicultural performances from 1pm to 9pm, offering a dynamic lineup of musicians, dancers, and cultural acts. The most exciting moments occur from 1pm to 4pm, followed by an official program from 6pm to 7:30pm, interwoven with more performances until the evening concludes. In collaboration with the City of Adelaide, Moonta Street and Gouger Street will host 80-100 stalls offering delicious food, unique merchandise, a main stage, an audience marquee, and a dedicated wine section.
How will residents, businesses and stakeholders be notified of this event?
All residents and businesses in the surrounding areas of these events will be notified via a letter box drop organised by the event organiser in the lead up to each event. An event hotline telephone number will be included in the letter, should a member of the public wish to lodge any feedback or concerns during the event.
Will residents and businesses be able to access properties during the events road closures?
Whilst the roads mentioned above will be closed to vehicular traffic, pedestrian access will be maintained with the footpaths kept clear to provide access.
Will the closures impact parking?
To facilitate the road closures, it is proposed that all the on-street parking spaces on the closed section of the roads will be changed to ‘No Stopping Saturday (Tow Away)’ for the duration of the road closures.
Off-street parking is readily available at UPark Central Market Car Park and UPark Andrew Street Car Park.
How will the proposed event road closures affect the Adelaide Central Market?
The Adelaide Central Market will remain open and trading as normal throughout the event, ensuring visitors can continue to enjoy the Market’s vibrant atmosphere and wide range of offerings. The road closure has been designed to ensure access and egress is maintained to the UPark Central Market Carpark via Gouger Street (westbound) and Grote Street at all times.
The Gouger Street closure commences from Morphett Street to a point immediately West of the UPark Central Market Entrance/Exit.
Clear signage for wayfinding will be installed to promote easy access to the Adelaide Central Market during the event road closure.
