Key Information

Adelaide is a city with a vibrant cultural life, a place full of inclusive, diverse, interesting, and memorable experiences.

The City Activation Program is led by the City Experience team with a focus on expanding the cultural offerings across Adelaide by activating the city during shoulder or gap periods in the annual events and festivals calendar as well as creating ways to redistribute visitation more evenly across precincts during peak times.

The Program aims to contribute to the cultural life of the City, stimulate local economies, and build wellbeing and community connections.

An RFQ (Request for Quote) is a formal process we use from time to time to invite suppliers, creatives, or service providers to submit pricing and details for specific work or projects. It helps us find the right people for the job while ensuring transparency and value for the community.

We run RFQs periodically, depending on the needs of our programs and events. If you’re interested in working with us (whether you're a musician, artist, designer, producer, technician, or other creative professional) you can join our supplier list to be notified when opportunities come up.

We provide clear information with each RFQ, including what we’re looking for, timelines, and how to apply. Being on our list means you’ll be among the first to hear about new opportunities.

Alternatively, if you're just a regular person with a great idea, we'd love to hear it! Get in touch via the email address listed in the Talk To Us tab.

FAQ

The City Activation Program is a Strategic Project of Council annually funded through the Business Plan and Budget.

It is all about bringing life, energy, and people into public spaces. Think of it like giving a city a “boost” to make it more fun, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.

Through the City Activation Program, the Council is able to experiment in real time, trying out ideas to see what works and what doesn't. Some things stick and become part of what we do long-term, while others help us learn and improve. Every year, we gather feedback and report back on what we’ve learned. This helps us shape future activations in ways that better serve the community and keep things fresh.

It's broad by definition and includes things like street performances, art installations, markets, murals, open-air concerts, outdoor furniture, maker fairs, food trucks, participatory installations, temporary social or recreational infrastructure, decorations, cultural celebrations, wellness activities, projections, interactive games, seasonal festivals, and pop-up events. We activate exclusively in the public realm.

The public realm refers to all publicly accessible spaces in a city that are open and available for everyone to use. This includes streets, squares, parks, footpaths, laneways, and other outdoor areas managed or maintained by the Council.

The goal is to make places feel safer, more vibrant, and worth visiting for tourists and locals alike. These activities help us create moments that connect people to place and to each other. It’s also a way to support small businesses by encouraging foot traffic and helping people rediscover their own city.

City Activation delivers on the following outcomes of the City Of Adelaide Strategic Plan 2024-2028:

Our Community: An interesting and engaging place to live, learn and visit

Our Economy: Adelaide’s unique experiences and opportunities attract visitors to our city

The City Activation Program contributes to the Cultural Policy 2025-2036 and the Economic Development Strategy 2024-2028.
