Project Information

The Christmas season in the City starts with Pageant and ends on Christmas Day. It is a time of joy and delight with family and loved ones, in which the City comes to life with activity, colour and sparkle. The current Christmas Festival Action Plan 2021-2024 is due to be renewed. Council asked for community feedback to help develop priorities for a new plan for Christmas in Adelaide, which would start in 2025 and go through to 2028. We asked for ideas and thoughts about Christmas in Adelaide to help us write the next Action Plan.

Project Update

Thank you for your interest in the Christmas Action Plan Project. The outcomes of the engagement were presented to the City Community Services and Culture Committee of Council in November.

The next step is the development of a draft Christmas Action Plan 2025-2028 which will be endorsed in 2025.

An annual budget is set by Council for city-wide Christmas experiences, in partnership with the community and businesses, which pays for decorations, events and activities such as the live music week of Countdown to Christmas at the Tree and public performances. In addition, Council’s subsidiaries Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA) and the Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) support traders with activations, decorations and advertising to attract visitors throughout November and December.

Council invests in a suite of new decorations each year such as the Giant Santa Trail in 2023. Council also funds events and markets such as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Event in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga and Adelady Christmas Village and AEDA has sponsored both the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant and Carols by Candlelight events.

What happens next?

Feedback received will be provided to Council members at a Workshop in November 2024

A draft Plan based on community and Council feedback will be developed and shared via Our Adelaide in early 2025.
