We are asking for feedback on an application from Tennis Australia to grant a temporary closure of a portion of War Memorial Drive. The purpose of the road closure is to support the delivery of the 2025 Adelaide International.
To facilitate this activity, it is proposed that War Memorial Drive, between the Adelaide Oval loading dock and the entrance to the Next Generation Gym carpark, will be closed from 6am Thursday 2 January until 6pm Monday 13 January 2025.
To facilitate the road closure, it is proposed that all on-street parking spaces on the closed section of the roads will be changed to ‘No stopping – Tow-Away’ for the duration of the road closure. Footpath access will be maintained for pedestrians on War Memorial Drive.
Under the Local Government Act 1999, the City of Adelaide is required to consult the public before it can grant a permit for an event that requests to use a public road for business purposes, and the said purpose will require whole or partial road closure(s) that may impede the passage of traffic to a material degree.
What is the 2025 Adelaide International?
The Adelaide International features around 150 of the world’s best tennis stars playing across singles and doubles competition. From 6-11 January 2025, The Drive will host a WTA 500 and ATP 250 combined tournament.
Showcasing South Australia’s world-class food, beverage, and entertainment offerings, the event experience at Pinky Flat will be expanded from 2024, featuring live entertainment, a family zone, food trucks, and more.
The proposed closure of a portion of War Memorial Drive will provide safe connection of the two sites for the crowds and essential supporting infrastructure as was done in 2024.
The Adelaide International 2024 drew 51,117 attendees at The Drive, making it the highest attendance record for a single week event since 2020.
What are the reasons for the road closure?
The event organisers Tennis Australia are seeking to close part of War Memorial Drive from 6am Thursday 2 January 2025 to 6pm Monday 13 January 2025 to provide safe passage for pedestrians travelling between The Drive and Pinky Flat and provide space for supporting essential infrastructure placed on the roadway as was done in 2024. The proposed road closure provides separation between the thousands of anticipated attendees and vehicles to provide a safe environment for event attendees, staff and the community.
There will be some impacts to usual footpath access. Pedestrians will be diverted to use adjacent footpaths.
How will stakeholders be notified of this event?
If the event is approved, all residents and businesses residing in the surrounding area will be notified of the upcoming event via a letterbox drop organised by the event organiser two weeks prior to the event. Included in the letter will be details of expected noise, road closure scope and an event hotline telephone number.
This event hotline telephone number is provided by the event organiser should a member of the public wish to lodge any feedback or concerns during the event.
Additionally, City of Adelaide upload details of upcoming, approved events on its Event Dashboard.
Who can I contact during the event if I have any concerns regarding the event?
Events are required to provide an event hotline telephone number, should a member of the public wish to lodge any feedback or concerns during the event.
Any member of the public can use the event hotline number to provide their feedback to the event organiser. It is the responsibility of the event organiser to consider all feedback provided and take any necessary actions to remedy the issue. The event hotline phone number will be operated for the duration of the event.
Alternatively, members of the public can contact the City of Adelaide on 8203 7203 to lodge any feedback or concerns.
Would fixed businesses remain accessible during the 2025 Adelaide International?
Yes, while the portion of road will be closed to vehicular traffic, pedestrian access will be maintained via footpath diversions.
Will commercial vehicles be able to service businesses within the road closures?
During the road closure no vehicles (authorised vehicles exempt) will be able to access the closed portion of road.
